Mexico City, Mexico— This past weekend, on the 9 and 10th of October, more than a million Mexicans filled Paseo de la Reforma, Mexico City’s largest and most important avenue, to live the Olympic Bicentennial Festival, a Mexican Sport Ministry Event (CONADE) co-designed and organized by Havas Sports Mexico.

President Felipe Calderón Hinojosa and Sport Minister Bernardo de la Garza Herrera inaugurated the event after an emotional opening ceremony with top Mexican athletes such as ex #1 ranked LPGA golfer Lorena Ochoa, Taekwando Olympic champion María del Rosario Espinoza, and Olympic medallist and world diving champion Paola Espinoza.

In addition to top Mexican athletes, Olympic champion swimmer Michael Phelps also participated, with an exhibition in a 25 m swimming pool, and different clinics for kids. The athletes invited competed in a friendly series of challenges on 7 different sports including baseball, golf, soccer, basketball, and beach volleyball. This gave the public the opportunity to see Michael Phelps batting, shooting a penalty kick, making a put and playing volleyball alongside other Mexican medallists.

The success of the Festival was guaranteed by the knowledge and experience sharing that was ensured between the Havas Sports Mexico and with the Havas Sports & Entertainment France teams, who were behind the concept and realization of a similar Paris 2012 bid event bringing a sports celebration to the Champs Elysees in 2005. The Paris event went on to win a Gold Cannes Lions for excellence.
